One of the two people shot while trying to escape a shooter in a Lexington bar off Clays Mill Road has died, according to Lexington police.
The shooting occurred about 4 p.m. Monday at Uncle 7’s Bourbon Bar & Grill on Delzan Place off Clays Mill Road, where a man fired multiple times before fleeing, according to police Sgt. Scott May.
Both gunshot victims were taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, May said. According to the Fayette County coroner’s office, James N. Terry, 68, died from a gunshot wound about 12:47 a.m. Tuesday.
The suspect, 69-year-old Larry Michael Walters, was found shortly after the incident, police said. Murder was added Tuesday to the charges filed against him.
According to Lexington police, Walters and Terry got into a physical altercation inside the bar. Walters showed a gun and began shooting, striking Terry.
Police did not say Tuesday if Terry was the victim who was found hiding in a bathroom or if he was another victim who didn’t discover he was shot in the back — he initially blamed the pain on diving under tables and chairs — until he was being interviewed by police. May described Monday how the victims were found.
The other victim was in stable condition Tuesday, police said.
May said several other patrons were in the bar at the time of the shooting and some dove for cover. Witnesses provided police with descriptions of Walters and the vehicle along with the license plate number.
Walters fled the scene but was arrested near his home on Galata Drive Monday and initially was charged with first-degree assault, criminal mischief and four counts of wanton endangerment, police said.
The fatal shooting is the fourth homicide this year in Lexington and the first since Jan. 26, according to Lexington police data.
Walters is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
